It is found in a small area in western South Africa, growing in a sandy soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from one to eight centimetres in height - depending on how flat it grows. The flowers are white.
The genera name from Greek gethyon, ‘bulb’. The species is named after Harry Hall 1906-1986, a formidable collector and from 1947-1968 the curator of the succulent collection at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.
